<h1 class="ql-align-center">Justice BP Katakey Committee</h1> <h2>Context:</h2> <ul><li class="ql-align-justify">National Green Tribunal (NGT) appointed Judge Katakey committee recommends legal action against Oil India Ltd. for violating various environmental as well industrial regulations.</li></ul> <h2>About:</h2> <ul><li>Supreme Court formed an expert committee to assess the damage and the cost of reparation of the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and surrounding ecologically fragile areas of Assam, which were damaged in the Baghjan oil well blowout in May 2020</li></ul> <ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Katakay committee made an interim recommendation in the status report submitted to the tribunal in which it sought legal action against Oil India Ltd. for violation of the Air, water &amp; Environment Protection Act.</li></ul> <ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Committee also stated that Oil India limited had violated the directive of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)</li></ul> <h2 class="ql-align-justify">National Green Tribunal (NGT):</h2> <ul><li>It is a statutory body set up under the National Green Tribunal Act (2010) for effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection and conservation of forests and other natural resources.</li></ul> <ul><li>India became the third country in the world to set up a specialised environmental tribunal i.e. NGT, only after Australia and New Zealand, and the first developing country to do so.</li></ul> <ul><li>NGT is mandated to make disposing of applications or appeals finally within 6 months of the filing of the same.</li></ul>
